The Pict Perspective is made up of two sisters. No, not Scottish or Irish. In fact, we aren’t even white. We are in fact, of Indian descent. We are South African born, so we are doubly lucky. We have a unique, combined culture and a beautifully Colourful Heritage.
Our culture is made up of Deepavalli celebrations, and Biltong. Purtassi and National Braai Day, which sadly falls during the fasting month of Purtassi, and so many more beautiful festivals, celebrations and prayers. Being South African Indian, means that we have the unique ability to look at both sides of a fairly unique coin. On one side we have something that is a mix of African and Western and on the other side, Indian.
When I said that we are doubly lucky, I meant that we have the beautiful Colours of our gorgeous South Africa, and the rich Colours of our inherited India. Both countries filled with a culture that is so rich, deep and diverse, that combining the two leads to explosions of Colour, sound, dance and of course, movies! Who could ever forget “Sarafina”, a plot filled with tragedy, but interspaced with stunning music and dance. Or “Roja” which once again, was a plot filled with angst, stunning dance sequences and an unforgettable music score. Both movies highlighted an indomitable sense of spirit and a will to survive, regardless of the obstacles in one’s way. I loved both, and of course, I still love the music!
So, to answer: The Colour, which translates to the music, the dance and the story-telling, all of which is inherent in both sides of our heritage and culture.
